However, understanding and exploring their classifications, origins, and formation processes deepens our appreciation. Rocks are broadly categorized into three main types: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. 

Igneous

Formed due to the cooling and crystallization of molten materials (magma & lava). There are two types:
Extrusive Rocks: Formed from magma that emerged on the surface of the Earth due to volcanic activities, where rapid solidification occurred due to quick cooling and exposure to water and air. These rocks are very fine-grained or even glassy. Examples of extrusive rocks are basalt, rhyolite, obsidian, etc.
Intrusive Rocks: Formed in the Earth's interior due to the high-pressure temperature and slow cooling to which the magma was exposed. Due to the slow cooling of magma, large crystals form. Examples of intrusive rocks are granite, diorite, gabbro, etc.

Sedimentary

Formed from the deposition of eroded and weathered materials, which originate mainly from the aggregate of other rocks such as sand, gravel, clay, minerals, etc. Deposition occurs in various environments, including marine (aquatic), transitional (shoreline), and continental environments (terrestrial).
Sedimentary rocks are of great importance as they contain information about countless terrains and the history of the Earth due to the presence of various fossils of living organisms and plants, such as shells and bones, inside them. Examples include limestone, chert, and dolomite.

Metamorphic

Formed due to exposure of the original rock (igneous, sedimentary, or even metamorphic) to heat and pressure for long periods, which results in a change in its shape and characteristics, resulting in new rock (like limestone, turning into marble or shale turning into slate). Examples of metamorphic rocks are marble, quartzite, and phyllite.
